Brief: RIMOWA Design Prize 23/24
The second edition of the RIMOWA Design Prize will continue to address the ever-important topic of mobility. Mobility is underpinned by values of freedom and support, while acknowledging RIMOWA’s tenets of resilience, excellence and quality which assure that all designs are created to provide a fulfilling purpose. Capable of being interpreted and reconfigured in a seemingly endless number of ways, it is important to consider what mobility means to everyone, and not just those who are able.
UP is a concept designed to address elderly dignity within mobility. One of our modern societal rules is that we must dress ourselves in order to step out into the public domain and be an active participant in society. Our idea is for everyone to be engaged within their communities and be heard, but we cannot accomplish this without tackling the first step of mobility, which is getting dressed.

This concept was developed as a tool of empowerment for the elderly to feel a sense of individualism and independence rather than shame and pity for not being able to access the outside world because of the dressing barrier. UP helps seniors in their daily journey of getting dressed and going about their day lives without having to worry about their dependence on a caretaker to assist them.
With the ever-increasing dependency ratio of elderly citizens, we must look more closely at how we can provide these people with their own tools to mediate their lives on their terms. The elderly are not looking for a cure, shame, or pity rather they seek to have access, be celebrated, and be proud of their journey throughout life. We believe that the future of mobility starts with observing and serving those neglected communities that do not have access to the tools that could assist them. At UP we strive to celebrate everyone’s daily journey of mobility.
